Together, we are fighting food insecurity in Newport and our surrounding communities. We, the pantry’s leadership and staff, are profoundly grateful for the incredible generosity shown by our community. For over 30 years, our pantry has been a beacon in the fight against food insecurity, thanks to the unwavering support of private and corporate donors like you. Your compassion keeps our shelves stocked, our operations strong, and our hearts full! You truly answer our prayers, and more importantly, the prayers of every guest we serve.
Imagine the profound relief when a parent, an elder, or a neighbor experiencing homelessness opens a food box from our pantry, knowing they’ll go to bed with a full belly. That moment of peace, made possible by your kindness, is truly priceless.
Making Every Donation Count: Thoughtful Giving
We happily accept food donations, and we’ve provided helpful guidelines and a wishlist to make it easy for you to contribute. As we strive to provide the most impactful support to our guests, we’ve learned a lot about what truly makes a difference.
Sometimes, a well-intentioned donation might not be the most practical for the unique circumstances of those we serve. For example, last month we received a generous box of coffee pods. While it was a kind gesture, many of our guests don’t have access to coffee pod machines. Their focus, understandably, is on securing fundamental needs.
Understanding the Reality of Food Insecurity
The daily lives of individuals facing food insecurity are often far removed from the everyday conveniences many of us enjoy. They are often juggling multiple jobs, actively seeking employment, or making difficult choices between necessities like tuition, medication, or keeping their car running. Their immediate needs are centered on nutritious, filling staples that provide energy and sustenance. They are looking for protein, fresh produce, bread, and even clean drinking water – essentials that can be hard to come by when struggling with housing or limited resources.
Our goal is to provide our community with fresh, nutritious options that keep them going strong, ensuring every donation has the greatest impact. When considering a donation, we encourage you to think about these vital items:
- Proteins: Eggs, milk, meat, poultry, fish
- Pantry Staples: Oil, salt, pepper, and other spices, peanut butter and jelly, cheese
- Fruits and Vegetables: Fresh, canned, or frozen options
- Grains: Bread, pasta, rice
- Hydration: Bottled water
While a bag of ground coffee or tea bags can be a comforting item, and we’re happy to distribute it when possible, our priority is always to provide food that fills bellies and offers vital nutrients.
Your Impact in Action
When we received that box of coffee pods, we were able to return it and use the funds to purchase essential items like milk and bread. This truly exemplifies how your thoughtfulness, even in unexpected ways, directly benefits those in need. Every contribution, big or small, plays a crucial role in our mission.
