USDA News: Purchasing from Local Producers

On August 1, 2025, US Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins announced the USDA’s intent to purchase up to $230 million in fresh seafood, fruits, and vegetables from American farmers and producers to distribute to food banks and nutrition assistance programs across the country! (See Sec. 42 of the Agriculture Act, 1935).

Not only will this action support smaller scale producers and farmers, but also will provide nutritious and fresh product for our guests. So far, the Agriculture Marketing Service Section will purchase:

Fresh Apples: $35M

Alaska Pollock: $100M

Dried Cranberries: $25M

Dry Beans: $50M (Black $16M | Pinto $13M | Kidney $10M | Navy $3M | Great Northern $6M | Small Red $2M)

Farm-Raised Catfish: $20M
